About the Panel
The Critic is Essential: A Latinx Arts Critics Panel

Articles published by the New York Times, Hyperallergic, Forbes, and other publications. show the lack of critics of color in publications that feature reviews of art. What is the role of the critic in the arts ecosystem? Why does an arts community need critics with a shared background? In this panel, practicing critics Reyes Ramirez, Sarah Rafael Garcia, Icess Fernandez Rojas and Yeiry Guevara, will share experiences, ideas, and inspiration navigating critical writing on art forms from various perspectives, such as food, film, visual art, and literary criticism, to highlight Latinx critics as important members of the artistic community. Participants will be able to ask questions, be inspired to meet creatives, and find new collaborations at the NALAC Summit.

Dissent: Zine Culture
(And the Voices You Wouldn't Hear Otherwise) Exhibition - 12/10/19

I am so proud to have my zines available in this exhibition taking place at the University of Texas. My work is next to some wonderful zine friends as well. Check it out next time you’re on campus! The exhibition runs until December 10, 2019.

About the Exhibition:

The University of Texas at Austin’s Latino Studies has a flashy new exhibition in the halls of the Gordon-White Building (GWB). Made up of self-published poetry, essays, photographs, short stories, and artwork, Dissent: Zine Culture (And the Voices You Wouldn’t Hear Otherwise) highlights the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection’s U.S. Latinx Zine and Graphic Novel Collection with over forty zines.

Thank you UT College of Liberal Arts, Latino Studies Department, The Benson Latin American Collection, University of Texas at Austin for organizing this exhibition!

Mil gracias to St. Sucia for documenting the exhibition! The first image displays “Vos Cipota”. The one below shows the blue tiny zine I made titled “Growing Up Salvadoran”.

Señorita Cinema - 11/1/2019

Señorita Cinema - 11/1/2019

During 2018 when I was freelancing and doing my creative practice full-time, I set the goal to experiment with video as a new medium in my practice. I found the medium challenging and uncomfortable. The thing that no one tells you is that growth requires all of you; and growth feels challenging and uncomfortable.

In this format, I found a way to grow my storytelling skills in a digitally intimate way. I also found the encouragement to keep going. Big shoutout to my homie Angel Yau for giving me my first taste of video art and performance at her series, VHS Presents. YOU DA BEST, Angel!

In my move to Texas, I’m grateful to continue building my creative community and creative practice. Which has led to this happy announcement:

I screening my first video work at Señorita Cinema on November 1-3, 2019.
This film festival is the world’s only Latina film festival.
My screening took place on Saturday, November 2 at 7 pm.

Full schedule available here.

San Anto Zine Fest - 10/5/19

Art by Shelby Criswell!

I was thrilled to be part of San Anto Zine Fest (SAZF) on October 5, 2019. The organizers are super bad ass women who have created the largest zine fest in San Antonio, TX.  Read my piece in Texas Monthly about the fest!

The beautiful brains behind SAZF: Natasha Hernadez, nurse, writer, and co-publisher of St. Sucia and Isabel Ann Castro, illustrator and co-publisher of St. Sucia; Suzy González, visual artist and co-publisher of Yes Ma’am Zine; Ana Ortiz, poet and co-publisher of La Liga Zine and Isabel Cepeda, visual/sound artist and co-publisher of La Liga Zine. Also, Emma Hernandez at SAPL helped make this fest happen.

This was my first time vending in San Antonio, TX. Also, I led a workshop at SAZF along with my sister who is an Art Therapist! Our session was titled “Beyond Treat Yo Self: Self-Care Zine Workshop” in the Latino Collection and Resource Center.

Documenting the Nameplate - 9/19/19

In my second Houston + NYC collaboration, I’m happy to announce that Documenting The Nameplate will be in Houston for two nights. I met the creators, Marcel and Isabel, at their archive party in Brooklyn. Ever since, I’ve been a huge fan of their work. Check out their Top Rank podcast on the topic as well.

After learning about their plans to visit Houston, I was excited to collaborate to make their visit to H-town memorable.

Come and learn about their project at their talk at University of Houston on 9/18.

Also, get your nameplate scanned at Sawyer Yards on 9/19. All free and open to the public!

UPDATE: Event was cancelled due to flooding from Tropical Storm Imelda.
